The rugs are very thick and tend not to show dirt. You can use a vacuum, just watch out for the fringe and do not get it caught in you vacuum. A good shake outside will remove most of the dirt and dust.
We put our rugs in the bathtub with a mild detergent and step on them then line dry.
You can wash the rugs in a machine if yours is large enough or use a commercial machine at the laundromat. Cool water is recommended for wool rugs to keep the original shag look. However, you can wash in hot water and the rug will attain a wooly, almost Berber look. This is called felting. The rug will only shrink a small percent (approximately 5%) and many customers like this thicker look - almost like the original sheep.
